Western Link Project
The 385-kilometre subsea power cable, a crucial part of the Western Link HVDC project, recently reached shore in North Ayrshire. The project will allow the transfer of renewable energy from Scotland to England and Wales in large volumes to meet peak demand.
Setters were chosen to design and manage safety management systems by the two organisations on one of the UK’s largest construction projects of late with a total value of £1.8 billion
The link will use DC technology to transmit the electricity efficiently across the large distance but will be converted to AC at each end of the route and two converter stations are being created as part of the project. The design and construction of the cables and converter stations are being undertaken by a consortium of industry-leading companies, Siemens and Prysmian.
